The Foyle Cup is one of Ireland and indeed Europe's premier youth tournaments.
It is widely recognised as a tournament that launches the careers of young players aspiring to sign professional contracts.
Originally launched in 1992 with 8 competing teams, it has grown into a six day festival of football catering for entries at Under 9 / 10 / 11 / 12 / 13 / 14 /15 / 16 /17 / 19, and ladies and girls competitions at Under 11/13.
No fewer that 310 competed in this wonderful event in 2016 – teams of the calibre of Celtic FC, Norwich City FC, Hearts FC, Sheffield United, Partick Thistle, Altrincham as well as teams from across Europe and America.
Teams are placed in geographically seeded groups and play a series of matches against other sides in the group. At the end of the group stage, teams are separated into cup competitions in line with their group standings. This means the best clubs compete for the Foyle Cup, and other teams are placed in subsidiary competitions. By doing this every team gets the same number of games, and play one match every day for the entire week. Depending on entry numbers it may be necessary for some age groups to play a second game on one of the days. Matches are spaced out across the day, allowing spectators to watch up to 3 games every day.
The matches are played at over 30 superb venues in Derry City and throughout counties Derry, Tyrone & Donegal. The finals are normally played at Eircom League side Derry City’s Brandywell Stadium and Institute FC.
